MAP - Mental Arithmetic

MAP (Mental Arithmetic Practice) is the fantastic, online, whole school mental maths toolkit, created by Anthony Reddy from Reddy Made Maths and Dave Godfrey from Number Fun, and hosted on Findel Education’s EuHu platform

MAP is a flexible and creative toolkit which redefines the teaching and learning of mental calculation in primary schools.

It is a highly engaging, interactive and visual combination of:
  • Ideas and Activities
  • Games and Challenges
  • Characters and Catchphrases
  • Songs and Story
  • Imagery and Manipulatives
  • Exemplars and Downloads
MAP has two key ‘missions’: –
  • To equip teaching staff with the knowledge and understanding of the most engaging and effective ways to teach mental mathematics.
  • To give children a thorough and consistent approach to mental calculation, which:

    • inspires them to learn all key number facts and strategies
    • helps them to clearly use (and be able to name) the most appropriate and efficient method to use for any given calculation

The Three Strands of MAP

1. Counting

Counting skills are fundamental to mental mathematics, giving children:

  • Confidence in seeing, hearing and saying number sequences, enabling them to spot number patterns and eventually develop algebraic thinking
  • Knowledge of the steps involved in learning times tables and recognising multiples
  • Clear support in answering almost any addition or subtraction calculation

We recommend starting each daily MAP session with 5 minutes of counting

2. Number facts

The more number facts that children have at their disposal (automaticity), the more their general maths confidence will increase.
Knowing and recalling number facts means:

  • Children no longer need fingers or resources and can ‘declare’ what they know quickly and confidently
  • Their working memory is freed to actually calculate
  • Having a bank of facts supports progression in both mental and written arithmetic

MAP provides an overview of all key facts which need to be learnt across each year group, along with a wealth of engaging ideas, games, activities and songs to support their learning.

3. Mental strategies

Supporting children to develop a bank of mental calculation strategies (for all four operations) is at the heart of MAP.
Many pupils, for example, use column methods to solve calculations which could have been completed much more efficiently with a mental method.
Teaching mental strategies regularly helps children to:

  • Develop a much stronger ‘number sense’
  • Gain understanding and confidence with all aspects of number
  • Choose the most efficient method for any given calculation

MAP uses a unique combination of tools to help children learn each mental strategy.  These include Number Fun videos, (with dedicated strategy characters, stories and catchphrases), activities, ideas and games to practice these strategies, alongside clear, visually stimulating progression materials.

Accessing and Using MAP

The MAP toolkit contains everything you could possibly need to transform the teaching of mental maths in your school. Access the materials through:

Number Fun
The Planning Route

Detailed 6-week planning overviews for each year group, containing direct links to videos, games, ideas and images

The Resources Route

A comprehensive digital resource bank containing:

  • Over 180 Number Fun videos (including key characters, songs, animations and catchphrases),
  • A wealth of high-quality games, ideas and activities, all with accompanying video tutorials and downloadable gameboards
  • Display resources and mental strategy exemplars from the Number Fun Visual Calculation Policy

Reddy Made Maths ideas have an immediate impact on both teachers, practise and children’s understanding

Progression Documents

The MAP Progression Documents underpin the planning, videos and all the other resources you’ll find as part of the toolkit.
Use these documents as the basis for your planning or to understand the expectations for Counting, Facts and Strategies across the primary school.

MAP sessions are extremely flexible and can be timetabled to fit in with any school’s individual circumstances.

MAP CPD and Training

Anthony also offers training days or CPD sessions on mental maths, and how best it can be taught through the use of a daily MAP session.

These sessions can be delivered in person or online and can be either whole school or year group / Key Stage specific.
